Meiji Emperor and Empress, 1886
From Fuji Arts' Winter Exhibition of Chikanobu
Meiji Emperor and Empress, 1886 - Intriguing portrait of the Meiji Emperor and Empress surrounded by a group of government officials and dignitaries, and several palace ladies-in-waiting. The rulers are shown at top center sitting in ornately carved chairs, the emperor in a military uniform and the empress wearing an unusual headdress. Two of the men are traditionally dressed in formal robes and court caps, while the rest wear uniforms decorated with sashes and medals. At lower left, a kneeling beauty holds an offering tray of sweets, while another in the center holds a poem slip on a lacquer tray. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black uniforms, a burnished pattern on the black court robe in the center, and embossing on the white kimono trim.
