Kiyonaga (1752 - 1815) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Enjoying the Cool of the Evening by the Shijo Bridge
Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Adachi Limited Edition Beauties - In 1967, the venerable Adachi Publisher of Tokyo released a limited edition series of 25 classic ukiyo-e beauty subjects. These beautiful reprints feature masterworks by Utamaro, Kiyonaga, Eisho, and others, including some subjects seldom seen in reprint. Printed with fine line work and attractive color, some designs feature deluxe treatments such as embossing or shimmering mica. Limited to 500 sets, each print is numbered on the reverse with a special Adachi publisher's seal. A wonderful opportunity to collect a lovely bijin reprint from a great limited edition release.
Comments - Attractive scene of beauties enjoying the cool of the evening along the river by the Shijo Bridge. The river location in the summertime was a lovely place to escape the heat. At left, a seated woman holds a red lacquer sake cup while at lower right, another beauty leans over the edge of the platform to launch a floating firework. A wonderful view of this traditional activity, detailed with delicate embossing in the gently undulating water.
