Eishi (1756 - 1829) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Segawa of the Ogiya
- In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
Comments - Beautiful Eishi portrait of the courtesan Segawa of the Ogiya, smiling happily as she looks ahead, one hand resting gracefully on her collar. She wears a blue outer robe over a pale pink kimono with a netted and floral pattern, and a red under robe with a light blue collar. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun adorned with a large comb, many slender hairpins, and a pink ribbon. A lovely image with fine line work in the hair and wonderful handling of the translucent comb.
