Original Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print
Outdoor Performance, 1869
Comments - Charming scene of a young nobleman and two beauties performing a play on an outdoor stage against a backdrop of the ocean with waves lapping at the shore. The man holds a doll in one hand, smiling as the beauty kneeling at his side tugs on his sleeve. Lanterns are set up on poles along one stage of the platform to provide footlights. Beauties in the foreground carry shamisen to provide musical accompaniment, while several men watch at right. Red paper lanterns and blossoming cherry branches frame the scene at top. An intriguing design with a handsomely detailed setting.
