Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Subscription List
Comments - Terrific kabuki scene illustrating the famous play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) which tells the story of how Yoshitsune Minamoto and his faithful retainer Benkei attempt to sneak across the border disguised as monks. Charged with intercepting the party, the aristocrat Togashi, shown at right in formal dress, becomes suspicious of the young porter at lower left, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). To allay the daimyo's suspicions, Benkei gestures angrily as he berates the porter, as he would never do to his master, waving his fan and clutching a string a prayer beads. A handsome design with the figures set off by a deep red background with a pine tree and bamboo. Detailed with embossing on Benkei's white pants and burnishing on Togashi's court cap.
