Battle of Ueno, 1890 by Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle of Ueno, 1890

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the Battle of Ueno at Kaneiji Shrine in 1868. The battle took place between Meiji Imperial forces and samurai loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Boshin or Todai Wars of 1868 - 1869. In the center, a samurai raises his sword against a soldier from the Tosa Clan wearing a shaguma or "Red Bear" wig, grabbing the handle of his spear with his other hand. At right, a monk swings a heavy iron club as a swordsman thrusts his blade at him. A second monk watches calmly from the left, holding his hat above his head for a better view of the action. A cuckoo flies through the darkening sky at upper left as raindrops fall steadily. A great scene filled with action, set against a handsome background of the red shrine buildings and deep green foliage.
