Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya, 1852
Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the samurai and folk hero Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya in the play "Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari." He looks up with an angry frown as stars twinkle in the night sky, a compass wrapped in blue cloth in his hand. He wears a black coat with a bold pattern of stylized blossoms with splashing waves on the collar over a brown kimono and suit of armor trimmed with fur cuffs. An interesting design, nicely detailed.
