Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
New Play at the Kabukiza: Genpei Tsutsuji, 1893
Comments - Bold kabuki scene from the play "Genpei Tsutsuji" at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo, a drama about the warring Taira and Minamoto clans. At right, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane waves his fan angrily above his head as he gestures at the young Taira Prince Atsumori during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. He rides a black horse and wears a fine suit of armor over a brocade robe. Atsumori looks back at him with a wistful smile, realizing that he is facing his death. His yellow outer robe features the butterfly crest of the Taira clan, and his long hair falls over his shoulders, adding to his youthful appearance. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the horse and the black fan, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on some of the butterflies.
