Scenes from the 47 Ronin
Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych featuring three scenes from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the drama about the 47 ronin. In Act 5 at left, the villainous Sadakuro kills the elderly Yoichibei for his money after encountering him on the Yamazaki Highway at night. He grabs the drawstring's of his victim's purse as the old man struggles to maintain his grip. In the center, the courtesan Okaru smiles at her companion, who glares at her angrily, his arms firmly folded across his chest. In Act 7 at right, Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, looks ups up suspiciously as he reads a secret message from the vendetta. The diagonal divisions and the bold red tie-dyed fabric pattern in the background of the center panel enliven the design.
