Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Robber at a Shrine, 1870
Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the famous robber Nippon Daemon at a shrine, scowling angrily at the samurai at lower left, who stares back at him with a grimace. Daemon wears a plaid kimono, a black robe decorated with a magic nine-tailed fox draped over his shoulders, an ornate pipe in one hand. At right, a nobleman in a court cap holds out a small red brocade drawstring bag, watching the thief with a frown. Behind Daemon, the doors of the shrine are decorated with colorfully painted carved panels, creating a striking setting for the large expressive figures. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Shikan, and Sawamura Tossho. Nicely detailed with a subtle burnished pattern on the black cap.
