Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Spying on a Couple, 1858
Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych from the tragic tale of the lovers Ohan and Choemon showing the samurai Kataoka Kozaemon spying on the couple in an interior. He clings to a pine tree at right, staring through a hole in the shoji window with a worried frown, his eyes wide. Inside, the Obiya Choemon tugs on the end of a sash held by the beauty, Shinanoya Ohan. She smiles back at him, playfully waving her kimono sleeve, but he looks at her unhappily. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Kataoka Nizaemon, and Ichikawa Kuzo. A fascinating subject with wonderful detail in the setting.
