Series; Kanadehon Chushingura, 1897
The 47 Ronin, Act 2: Wakasanosuke’s Mansion: The Pine-cutting Scene - Terrific woodblock illustrating Act 2 from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin. In the foreground, a beauty bows respectfully at the feet of the young samurai Rikiya Yuranosuke. In the background, after hearing the plan for Wakasanosuke to avenge Moronao's offensive behavior, the loyal Honzo cuts a pine branch to offer to Wakasanosuke as a sign of his support for the plan. Beautiful architectural detail in the palace setting. A handsome scene with fine detail and soft, attractive color.
