Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
View of the Gift of the Emperor's Gift Cup, 1877
Comments - Interesting scene of a ceremony with the Meiji Emperor, who sits on a platform in the center surrounded by noblemen in traditional court robes, presenting cups of sake to the Imperial Army leaders involved in quelling the Satsuma Rebellion. In the center, an officer in military uniform bows respectfully, holding out a shallow red lacquer cup of sake with both hands. Two other men sit in chairs flanking him, each with his own sake cup. Beauties on either side hold long-handled sake servers, while other guests are seated along the wall, which is covered with draperies. Nicely detailed.
