Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Puppet Performance, 1857
Series; Genji in the Twelve Months
Puppet Performance, 1857 - Lovely autumn scene of Prince Genji and his attendants performing a puppet play outside the garden gate of a young beauty's home in a parody of the tale of Ushiwakamaru serenading Joruri. At left, the nobleman and a friend hold a puppet of Ushiwakamaru playing the flute high above their heads, while a young boy kneels behind them holding a puppet of a man with a lantern. Two smiling attendants greet them from the courtyard, each holding a lamp. Inside the home, the beauty plays the koto, kneeling over her instrument, accompanied by shamisen and kokyu. A full moon glows softly in the dark night sky above the grasses and blossoms. A charming design with wonderful detail and soft shading in the sky.
