Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lovers Meeting Secretly, 1851
Comments - Handsome scene from the play commonly known as "Urazato Tokijiro." The beautiful courtesan Urazato has been meeting secretly with her sweetheart, the samurai Tokijiro, after her employer forbid the pair to see each other. Here, they enjoy a quiet moment together in her private quarters on a cold winter day. Tokijiro looks up at the beauty with a worried expression as he clutches a cloth in one hand. Urazato smiles down at him sweetly as she stretches out a white sash between her hands. A toothbrush sits across a bowl on the window seat behind her the couple, and snow falls heavily through the night sky, blanketing the rooftops and pines. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
