Ashikaga Yorikani Attacking the Courtesan Takao, 1882 - Dramatic kabuki scene of the nobleman Ashikaga Yorikane attacking his lover, the beautiful courtesan Takao, raising his sword above his head as the beauty recoils, throwing her hand out in alarm. Yorikane was so infatuated with Takao that he neglected his official duties, prompting some of his retainers to plot to overthrow him. A family servant convinced Takao that she should break with Yorikane for his own sake, so she falsely told him that she was seeing someone else. The enraged Yorikane then stabbed and killed her. At left, the sumo wrestler Kinugawa watches with an angry frown, a few loose wisps of hair framing his face. The scene takes place on a boat, with waves visible at left beneath a deep red sky. From left, the actors are Arashi Rikan, Onoe Kikugoro, and Ichikawa Danjuro. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and embossing on the white kimono and kimono collar. The first time we've offered this subject.
