Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lion Dancer Fending Off Attackers, 1857
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a lion dancer fending off attackers. Raising a peony branch above his head like a weapon, he steps on a man sprawling on the floor. He wears a long red wig topped with a folding fan and a large peony blossom, his green and white robe trimmed with fringe. Behind them, a young man wields a sword as he kneels beside a commoner. At top, chanters and musicians on a platform provide accompaniment. A lively action scene with wonderful detail.
