The 47 Ronin, Act 4: Lord Hangan's Suicide and Vacating the Palace
Series; The Treasury of Loyal Retainers (Kanadehon Chushingura), 1859
The 47 Ronin, Act 4: Lord Hangan's Suicide and Vacating the Palace - Great scene from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin. Here Yuranosuke stands outside the palace holding the dirk with which his master, Lord Hangan, has just committed suicide. Hangan's retainers gather round, agreeing to avenge his death, which was his dying wish. The illustration above shows a view inside the palace, with a nobleman reading out the shogun's order for Hangan to commit suicide. Kataoka Nizaemon appears at Yuranosuke. An interesting combination showing these two events from Act 4.
