Rescuing a Beauty by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Rescuing a Beauty

Comments - Terrific scene from a kabuki play of the Yoshiwara courtesan Urazato bound with a rope. She kneels in a snowy courtyard as her young daughter Midori sets a snow-covered straw hat upon her head. Another girl looks up with a worried expression, clutching her hands to her face. Having scaled the walls of the courtyard, her lover Tokijiro climbs down a pine tree to rescue the beauty, his sword hanging from a cord clenched between his teeth. Beautiful detail in the expressive faces and the beauty's flowing black hair, and a wonderful palace setting with snow falling against the deep blue sky. Fine embossing in the white kimono collar and Tokijiro's white scarf. A fantastic triptych.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 14" x 27 3/4"
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
