Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ceremony of the Issuance of the Constitution, 1889
Comments - Interesting depiction of the ceremony during the issuance of the Japanese Constitution in 1889. The Meiji Emperor stands behind a cloth-covered table as a man stands before him holding out a paper, his head deeply bowed. A group of men wearing matching uniforms with white sashes across their chests stands to one side, while an audience is assembled below. Purple drapery overhead bears the Imperial chrysanthemum crest. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black jackets and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the Emperor's sash and the mirror or window behind him.
