Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Three Acts from the 47 Ronin
Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting three acts from the "Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Kanadehon Chushingura), the drama based on the true story of the 47 ronin. Act 3 at left depicts the quarrel in the palace between Lord Hangan and Lord Moronao, which leads to the suicide of Hangan. In the center in Act 4, Hangan's loyal retainer Oboshi Yuranosuke stands outside the palace, clutching the dirk with which Lord Hangan has just committed seppuku, vowing to avenge his death. In Act 5 at right, the villainous Odo Sadakuro robs and murders the elderly Yoichibei on the Yamazaki Highway one night. Nice large expressive figures, detailed with burnishing on the black kimono and embossing on Yoichibei's white hair, Hangan's white collar, and Moronao's fan.
