Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers
Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the "Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Kanadehon Chushingura), the famous tale of the 47 ronin. Here, the ronin are returning following their successful night attack on Moronao's mansion when they are stopped by a hatamoto mounted on horseback and carrying a spear, who forbids them from passing over Ryogoku Bridge into his master's province. In the center, the leader of the ronin, Oboshi Yuranosuke, looks up at the official with a frown, while the elderly warrior at left throws his hands out in an agitated manner. The samurai behind him carries an enormous wooden mallet over his shoulder. The bridge arches off into the distance at right, while the snow-covered rooftops of the city line the opposite shore. Nice large colorful figures, detailed with embossing on the elder's white hair and the white areas of his kimono.
