Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Spirit of the Earth Spider, 1881
Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Tsuchigumo" (The Earth Spider) featuring from left, Nakamura Shikan Iv as the yakko or servant Komahei, Iwai Hanshiro VIII as the geisha Kohan, Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the soldier Gunnai, Onoe Kikugoro V as the spirit of the Earth Spider, and Ichikawa Sadanji I as Hirai Yasumasa. In the center, the spirit of the Earth Spider raises a striped pole above his head as he grimaces angrily at Yasumasa, who prepares to draw his sword. His long shaggy hair sticks out around his face, and his blue stage makeup adds to his eerie appearance. A heavy spider web runs cross the background framed by foliage above. A bold design, nicely detailed.
