Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesans on a Spring Day, 1864
Comments - Attractive scene of courtesans enjoying a spring day with blossoming cherry trees outside the verandah railing. At left, a young kamuro or child apprentice plays with a white cat, holding it over her shoulder as she kneels beside an elegant courtesan. She wears a black outer kimono with a burnished geometric pattern bordered with seashells and tie-dyed starbursts, over a pale blue seashell print robe. At right, one beauty holds a long letter as her companion takes a piece of food from the grill resting across a brazier before her. Another courtesan practices the shamisen, a music book on the floor nearby. Wonderful detail in this handsome design, including embossing on the white kimono trim.
