Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauties Watching a Performing Monkey
Comments - Charming triptych depicting a beauty and her companions watching a monkey performing. A fine reed blind separates the beauty from the monkey, which hops about in a shirabyoshi dancer's costume. A female monkey trainer kneels nearby, while two other women accompany the performance playing shamisen and hand drum. The beauty sits on a cushion, leaning against a lacquer armrest topped with white fur, smiling with pleasure. Lovely color and detail in the elegant kimono and obi fabrics, and the delicate line work of the reed blind. Includes embossing on the white kimono trim and fur, and burnishing on the black lacquer stand and the edge of the blind.
