Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sawamuro Tossho II as Nippon Daemon
Series; Actors in Hit Plays as Heroes of the Underworld, 1864
Sawamuro Tossho II as Nippon Daemon - Terrific kabuki portrait of the actor Sawamura Tossho II as the otokodate or street knight Nippon Daemon. He wears a fantastic black outer kimono patterned with a fierce dragon, a large jewel, and splashing waves. He looks over his shoulder with a frown, his eyes wide, gripping his hands together with an index finger pointed upwards. His hair is pulled back into a loose ponytail, with shorter hair sticking up atop his head. Beautifully detailed with fine line work in the har and burnishing on the black areas of the robe. This image appears on page 74 of Amy Reigle Newland's book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master, Toyoharu Kunichika." A striking design.
