Original Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869) Japanese Woodblock Print
Daimyo Procession at Kasumigaseki in Edo, 1863
Comments - Fantastic panoramic view of a daimyo's procession through Kasumigaseki in Edo. The lord rides a dappled horse at center, a retainer shielding him with a large red umbrella. He is surrounded by groups of identically dressed retainers, some carrying tall standards, and followed by two riderless horses draped with lion and leopard skins. The mansions lining the streets are beautifully detailed, with the tops of blossoming cherry trees peeking above the rooftops from the interior courtyards. A wonderful view with Mt. Fuji rising at left and clouds drifting across the scene. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
