Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Echizen Province: Shinozuka Iga no Kami Shigehiro
Series; The Sixty-odd Provinces of Great Japan, circa 1845
Echizen Province: Shinozuka Iga no Kami Shigehiro - Terrific image of the warrior Shinozuka Iga no Kami Shigehiro gripping a stone marker in a classic kabuki pillar wrapping pose. He glares fiercely over his shoulder as the holds the heavy marker against his shoulder, one foot raised in the air. He wears a handsome robe over a fine suit of armor, his sleeves tied back with a purple and yellow twisted rope. The inset above for Echizen Province shoes another samurai in a similar stance, gripping the rugged trunk of a pine tree. A great, dynamic design.
