The Seventh Month: Suketakaya Takasuke IV as Hotoke Gozen
Series; Famous Views for the Twelve Months, 1882
The Seventh Month: Suketakaya Takasuke IV as Hotoke Gozen - Handsome kabuki portrait of Suketakaya Takasuke IV as Hotoke Gozen, a shirabyoshi dancer and favorite of Taira no Kiyomori. She later became a nun, joining the two sisters Gio and Gijo who had become nuns after being replaced as dancers by Hotoke. She smiles slightly as she turns her head to the side, the breeze ruffling the hair alongside her face, a black lacquer traveling hat and walking stick in hand as she makes her way to join the sisters. The fan-shaped inset above by Kyosai depicts the two nuns in a rustic country retreat. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, and embossing in the white kimono trim, the blue obi, and the purple cloth atop the walking stick.
