Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Anxious Young Warrior
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young warrior kneeling before his elder, anxiously leaning forward with a frown. The older samurai grips a naginata in one hand and a poem slip in the other, staring sternly at his young companion. His black robe features a delicate burnished scroll pattern, pushed down to the waist to reveal his embossed white kimono. The young man's hair is pulled back into a ponytail tied with white cord, and he wears a burnished black kimono tucked into striped hakama pants. A matron stands behind him, watching the older man carefully, the window behind her opening onto a blossoming cherry tree. A handsome design, attractively colored and finely printed with additional embossing in the cherry blossoms and burnishing in the black window frame and naginata handle.
