Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yosaburo Reunited with Otomi, 1855
Comments - Terrific kabuki double portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Mukokizu no Yosaburo and Bando Shuka I as the beauty Yokogushi Otomi. Previously, Yosaburo was captured during a tryst with Otomi, who was a gang boss's mistress, and slashed all over. After turning to a life of crime, the scarred young man is reunited with Otomi years later during a blackmail attempt. She smiles up at him happily, a pipe in hand and her hair slightly disheveled, a comb slipping loose at the side. He regards her with a rather pained, bittersweet expression, scars visible on his face and chest. A handsome design with fine line work in the blue kimono and soft shading in the background.
