Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sawamura Tossho as Nippondaemon, 1862
From an untitled series of half-length actor portraits on battledores
Sawamura Tossho as Nippondaemon, 1862 - Great kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho as Nippondaemon, the leader of a gang of thieves. He stares over his shoulder with an angry frown, his brows furrowed. His short hair sticks up atop his head, with the longer hair pulled back into a thick ponytail. He wears a black and plaid kimono over a red print under robe and a suit of armor, a bundle in blue cloth tied over his back. A colorful ball sits at lower left and a feathered shuttlecock at right. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black areas of the kimono, fine bokashi shading in the background, and wonderful wood grain on the battledore. A striking design from this great untitled Toyokuni III series.
