Saigo Takamori Watching a Beauty Dance, 1877 - Interesting scene of Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebels during the Satsuma Rebellion, watching a beauty dance. He sits in a chair covered with a leopard skin at right, a woman pouring sake into the goblet in his extended hand. In the center, the beauty strikes a graceful pose with a folding fan in each hand, while at left, a woman carrying a naginata gestures towards Meiji Imperial troops approaching in the distance. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black uniforms and boots. The first time we've offered this Chikanobu subject.
