The 47 Ronin, Acts 5 and 6: The Yamazaki Highway; Kampei's Suicide - Handsome print featuring two scenes from the "Storehouse of Loyal Retainers" (Chushingura), the famous tale of the 47 ronin. While hunting at night in Act 5 at top, Kampei encounters one of the ronin taking part in the vendetta. Behind him on the Yamazaki Highway, the villain Ono Sadakuro kills Kampei's father-in-law, Yoichibei, while robbing him. In Act 6 below, believing that he has accidentally shot and killed his father-in-law, mistaking him for a wild boar while hunting at night, Kampei commits suicide, but is absolved of his guilt when it is determined that Yoichibei was stabbed to death, not shot. With his dying breath, he is allowed to sign the vendetta to avenge his master's death. A rare uncut page, nicely detailed with burnishing on the black robes.
