Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ladies of the Imperial Palace
Comments - Beautiful triptych showing the ladies of the Imperial Palace gathered together, enjoying a variety of pastimes. At lower right, a beauty composes a poem, a brush in one hand and a poetry slip in the other. At upper left, a woman kneels next to a folding screen, an open book on her lap and stacks of books on a low table nearby. Below, a woman looks up from playing the koto. The women are all sumptuously dressed in elegantly patterned kimono with delicate embossing on the yellow and pink under robes and white collars. Screens across the back of the elegant room depict cranes and colorful blossoms. A terrific Meiji era image with lively color and excellent detail in the household furnishings and sumptuous clothing.
