Arguing with a Nobleman, 1883
Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Arguing with a Nobleman, 1883 - Intriguing scene of an elderly samurai with a bushy beard arguing with a nobleman in an elegant interior. The warrior leans forward aggressively as he yells, the nobleman reacting with astonishment at his effrontery. The daimyo seems completely taken aback, his eyes wide and mouth turned down in a frown. He wears a beautiful black court robe with a subtle burnished pattern of paulownia leaves, and a black court cap. A retainer kneeling beside him is ready to spring to his master's defense, and even the young boy standing on the platform behind the nobleman reaches for his sword. Wonderful detail in the drapery and objects displayed on shelves behind the expressive figures. A fascinating subject.
