Scene from Umegawa and Chubei, 1854 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Umegawa and Chubei, 1854

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych illustrating the Ninokuchi Village scene from a play about the courtesan Umegawa and the courier Chubei, two young lovers who decided to commit suicide rather than be parted after Chubei steals the money to release Umegawa from her contract. Fleeing to Chubei's home village, they stop for shelter, where they encounter Chubei's father, Magoemon, here played by Morita Kan'ya XI. The beauty stands at left, stretching her hands above her head after repairing Magoemon's sandal for him. The older man kneels on a straw mat, staring over his shoulder as he realizes his fugitive son is waiting inside the house. A string of prayer beads dangles from his ear, supposed to help him think clearly. At right, Chubei clasps his hands together in a pleading gesture, sorry for the suffering that he has caused. A handsome design with expressive faces and an attractive winter landscape setting.
