Tanaka Tsurukichi, the Japanese Robinson Crusoe - Intriguing portrait of Tanaka Tsurukichi meeting with naval officers on an island. Tsurukichi emigrated to the United States, then returned to Japan to open a salt company. He was honored in Japan for enduring hardships to achieve an education. His story was told in a popular novel titled "The Adventurous Life of Tanaka Tsurukichi, Japanese Robinson Crusoe." He sits on a tree stump chatting with the men, dressed in plaid pants and a burgundy vest over a white shirt. A large ship can be seen off the coast, and two sailors hike up the hill at left. A fascinating subject, nicely detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
