Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Struggling over a Banner, 1887
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a group of people struggling over a banner outside a shrine at night. At right, a boatman has hold of one of the banner, an oar in his other hand. At left, a priest grabs the cloth as it drapes over his shoulders while the nobleman behind him yanks on the end, frowning angrily. A beauty is caught between them, raising her sleeve above her head as she turns her head away. She wears a red kimono patterned with a dragon over a suit of armor, her disheveled hair framing her face. The actors in the left panel are Kataoka Gado as the nobleman and Nakamura Shikan as the priest. The right panel includes Iwai Matsunosuke as the beauty Koiso. A handsome design with expressive figures and an interesting setting. Includes burnishing on the nobleman's black court cap.
