Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Three Samurai Fighting beneath a Bridge
Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Chinzei Hachiro goma no kaburaya" of three samurai fighting beneath at bridge. At left, a wild-haired rogue grips a wooden piling as he thrusts out his sword, an alarmed expression on his face. In the center, an angry samurai holds his weapon up with both hands as he sits on a rock amidst the rushing water. A flame dances in the sky beside him, a sign of a supernatural occurrence. At right Akugenta Yoshihira wraps his leg around the post, clinging to it with one hand while fighting with his sword. Behind them, a flock of geese descends for the evening, flying past an enormous full moon. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo II, Nakamura Utaemon IV, and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Akugenta Yoshihira. A fascinating subject with a dramatic setting.
