Original Miyagawa Shuntei (1873 - 1914) Japanese Woodblock Print
Playing Hanetsuki, 1894
Comments - Charming image of a beauty and a girl playing hanetsuki, a game similar to badminton that is traditionally enjoyed at New Year's. They use decorative battledores called hagoita to send a feathered shuttlecock back and forth. The woman holds her paddle out, watching as a shuttlecock seems to hang in mid-air overhead. Her kimono is shaded from pale lavender to white, bordered with grapes, vines, and wasps. An attractive holiday subject, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the beauty's hair, black obi, and black clogs, and touches of silver metallic pigment on the hair ornaments
