Original Ginko (active 1874 - 1897) Japanese Woodblock Print
Visit to a Shrine
Comments - Terrific scene of a group of beauties and men paying a visit to a shrine. In the center, a group of ladies-in-waiting accompany a princess, each wearing a colorful outer robe over a white kimono tucked into red pants. A few men follow behind, wearing traditional dress except for the addition of black top hats. The shrine building is beautifully carved and detailed, with a dragon wrapping around a large pillar decorated with clouds and a panel depicting phoenixes, pine branches, and bamboo. Cherry trees and pines fill the background. A fascinating image with wonderful color and detail, including burnishing on the black lacquer frame of the phoenix panel.
