Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Biography of Saigo Takamori, 1877
Comments - Intriguing triptych presenting the biography of Saigo Takamori, the leader of the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. Saigo sits in a plush green chair in the center, wearing a military uniform with a black jacket trimmed with yellow and red panels, and a hat edged with feathers. He stares defiantly ahead, his full beard sticking out around his face. Figures surround him on all side representing episodes from his life, each with an accompanying text panel. Realistically drawn with wonderful detail and color. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms and kimono.
