Along a Riverbank, 1855 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Along a Riverbank, 1855

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of three couples gathered along the bank of a river on a rainy night. The couple in the center uses straw mats as raincoats, while two other people carry umbrellas with bold "snake's eye" patterns. A few boats can be seen on the water, and the rooftops of the city stretch out along the opposite shore. From right, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Akogi Gennojo, Onoe Kikugoro II as Onnadayu Okoyo (R), Bando Kamezo I as Settanaoshi Chogoro, Onoe Kikugoro IV as Kumasaka Ocho (C), Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Yamazakiya Yogoro, and Nakamura Kamenojo I as the geisha Azuma (L). A handsome design with expressive figures.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29"
