Zhong You: Bando Shuka I as Lady Nijo and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Narihira, 1854
Series; Matches for the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety
Zhong You: Bando Shuka I as Lady Nijo and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Narihira, 1854 - Attractive design from a series pairing imagine kabuki performances with the "The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Devotion," a book written by a Chinese scholar recording examples of extraordinary devotion to their parents by children. Here, the courtier Ariwara no Narihira carries Lady Nijo on his back as they elope, making their way across a grassy plain along a river. The scene above shows Zhong You carrying a bag of rice home on his shoulders to feed his parents. Because his family was poor, Zhong You ate only wild vegetables so his parents could eat the rice. The actors are Bando Shuka I as Lady Nijo and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Narihira. Beautiful color and detail in this attractive design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Only the second time we have come across this series.
