Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from the Eight Dog Warriors, 1852
Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the tale "Satomi and the Eight Dog Warriors" (Satomi hakkenden), the story of eight samurai who were the mystical offspring of Princess Fuse and a dog. At left, the samurai Inukai Genpachi sits in the back of a boat, looking up with an angry grimace. He wears a striking black kimono patterned with a dragon, flames, and clouds trimmed with fringe over a suit of armor, his hair sticking up wildly atop his head. The elderly Tanaya Bungohei serves as boatman, pushing off from the shore with a bamboo pole. At right, a young samurai looks up with a grin as he pushes up his sleeve. The actors include Otani Tomoemon as Bungohei and Seki Sanjuro III as Genpachi. An interesting design with an attractive natural setting.
