Original Kuniteru II (1829 - 1874) Japanese Woodblock Print
Masakiyo and His Sixteen Retainers, 1865
Comments - Handsome triptych depicting Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) and his sixteen retainers surveying a castle across the shore. Masakiyo sits on a brown horse surrounded by warriors, wearing a red vest with his white circular crest over a fine suit of armor and a horned battle helmet. He gestures toward the fortress with his fan, glaring sternly. Several of the men seem agitated, grimacing and pointing toward the structure, while at right, a samurai gripping a spear looks down with a worried frown. Great expressive figures with fine detail in the armor and weapons, and soft shading in the night sky.
