Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Popularity Contest of Young Lavender Plants, 1854
Comments - Handsome image of kabuki actors offstage enjoying a visit to an iris garden. From right, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Nakamura Fukusuke I, Nakamura Danjuro VIII, Onoe Kikujiro II, Bando Takesaburo I, and Bando Shuka I. Wooden walkways extend out over the water among the blossoming plants, and a few koi fish can be seen bobbing to the surface at bottom center. The first time we've seen this attractive design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
