Scene from Kagamiyama, 1888 by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Kagamiyama, 1888

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." The senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji plots the downfall of her junior Onoe by substituting a zori sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring at the meek Onoe, who kneels quietly at her feet. The palace interior is elegantly furnished with a dragon screen and a fine lacquered railing around the balcony, with cherry blossoms framing the view outside. A great illustration from this well-known play with beautiful color and fine detail, including burnishing in the lacquer frame on the dragon screen.
