Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabuki Actors on a Fan, 1864
Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych featuring actors from different plays at the Nakamura Theater on a fan set against a boldly checked background. At bottom center, the disgraced samurai Nagoya Sanza stares up at his enemy Fuwa Banzaemon, who stole a valuable scroll in Sanza's care. Sanza wears a blue kimono patterned with swallows, rain, and cherry blossoms petals. The two samurai on either side of the men are the famous Soga Brothers, with Iwai Shijaku II as Soga Goro at left and Bando Hikosaburo V as Soga Juro at right. A red tie-dyed textile pattern fills the background of the fan. A striking design with real graphic impact, nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and touches of burnishing.
